Liban Salah | Culture House Oral History Interview | Music Culture, Legacy & Connection

55 Minutes 4 Seconds

Liban Salah, also known as Liban Noah, is a community activist and manager of Dur-Dur Band International, the reincarnation of Somalia’s legendary 1980s funk and soul group. He began reviving Somali music in London in 2002, working with original Dur-Dur bassist Abdillahi Ujeeri to bring together talent from the diaspora. In 2003, he organised a fundraiser at Brixton Academy for Hargeisa’s national theatre, drawing 6,000 to 7,000 people. By 2011, he had gathered enough musicians for a full show in Southall, west London. Since then, Liban has led Dur-Dur Band International through performances across the UK and Europe, including a milestone show at London’s Barbican Hall. His work has introduced Somali music to a new generation while keeping the diaspora connected to its culture. This interview forms part of Culture House’s Oral History Series, which documents the experiences, memories, and contributions of Somali people across generations, ensuring these stories are preserved for future communities, researchers, and audiences.
